Bear Avoidance in Camp The primary reason bears will enter camp is the smell of food. Bears have an extremely keen sense of smell and can detect food at a distance of some kilometres. Therefore, it is very important that we distance the smell of food from ourselves. Pitch camp away from bear corridors (trails, stream beds, lake shores, beaches, and food sources) Sleep in a tent, not under the stars. - Bear Bagging: Whenever you are not eating, your food and all other materials that could attract a bear should be placed in a waterproof sack (bear bag) and hung up a bear pole or placed in a bear locker. This includes all of the following items:
- All food items
Remember snacks such as trail mix, jerky, … which may be in smaller pockets of your pack All food containers (including Ziplocs), wrappers, and garbage Toiletries including: toothpaste, sunscreen, soap, shampoo, and lip balm Unwashed cookware Clothing with food spills on it - When packing, double bag all your food to avoid having food smells absorbed by your pack.
- Avoid cooking foods with extremely strong odours or odours which would be particularly attractive to bears (bacon, fish)
- Do not cook near your tent and never cook in your tent. (This includes trips when you are not in bear country.) Preferably, set up your kitchen 100 yards downwind from your tent.
- Do not eat in your tent
Keep your campsite clean and tidy at all times - Dispose of all grey water in toilets, where provided, or in a sump hole a good distance from your tent.
