This Bear is Dead - Because People Didn’t Practice Proper Bear Safety In August of 1996, this young yearling grizzly bear wandered into the Point Campground in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park in Kananaskis Country, Alberta. This picture was taken by the Deobalds before they left Point Campground the morning of the bear’s arrival. As soon as the reports of the bear’s presence came in, Rangers moved to evacuate the campground; however, before they could complete the evacuation, the bear discovered a container of sandwiches that some campers had put in the lake to keep cool. As a result, the bear became a problem in the area and had to be relocated. Several months later, in his new location, the bear trapped a young female ranger in an outdoor biffy and kept her there for several hours. This second “offence” convinced park authorities that the bear had become habituated to humans. As a result it was destroyed.
