Saving Bears

This Bear is Dead - Because People Didn’t Practice Proper Bear Safety

  • In August of 1996, this young yearling grizzly bear wandered into the Point Campground in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park in Kananaskis Country, Alberta.

  • This picture was taken by the Deobalds before they left Point Campground the morning of the bear’s arrival.

  • As soon as the reports of the bear’s presence came in, Rangers moved to evacuate the campground; however, before they could complete the evacuation, the bear discovered a container of sandwiches that some campers had put in the lake to keep cool.

  • As a result, the bear became a problem in the area and had to be relocated.

  • Several months later, in his new location, the bear trapped a young female ranger in an outdoor biffy and kept her there for several hours.

  • This second “offence” convinced park authorities that the bear had become habituated to humans.  As a result it was destroyed.
