Instant Pudding

OK, OK, this isn’t exactly cooking from scratch, but it is often overlooked as an easy dessert treat.

At Home:

  • Throw away box except for instructions, if you need them.  (You can also write the instructions on the ziploc bag.)
  • Pack pudding pouch and instructions in a ziploc bag.
  • Remember to pack enough milk powder to make two cups of milk.  The results will usually be better if you mix the milk powder in the water first, then add the pudding mix.

In Camp:

  • In a sealable shakeable container, such as a wide-mouth Nalgene bottle (or very sturdy ziploc) place:
    • 2 cups (500 ml) cold, filtered water (the colder the better)
    • ¾ cup (175 ml) milk powder
  • Shake, then add:
  •  The pudding mix
  • Shake until thickened.
  • Allow to stand for five to ten minutes.  If the pudding doesn't thicken the way it does at home, it still tastes the same, so don't sweat it.
  • Alternatively: You can bring along a small whip and mix the pudding in a pot; there usually isn't a problem in getting someone to lick the pot.
