Instant Rice

You can purchase bulk Minute Rice and add flavours on the trail.   This saves the expense and packaging of the flavoured rices you can buy.  Regular instant rices also cook much faster than the flavoured packages.

At Home:

Remember the margarine, as this adds to the rather bland flavour of plain instant rice. For other flavourings you can add:
  • Bouillon base, including chicken, beef, or vegetable
  • Instant soup mix, your favourite flavour (that left over Ichiban packet you didn't use when you put spaghetti sauce on your Ichiban, for example).
  • Salt, pepper, and spices
  • Herbs, chives
  • Onion and/or garlic salt/powder (don’t overdo it!)
  • Dehydrated vegetables, such as onion, celery, carrot, ... You may want to pre-soak these in a bit of hot water to soften them up.

In Camp:

Bring equal amounts of water and rice (with a dab of margarine) to a boil.  Cover and let sit for 5 minutes.

Note:  We do not recommend using commercial, flavoured, prepared "instant" rice packets, as these generally have very long cooking times.  Indeed, there is nothing instant about them.
